About Emily Harrington

I grew up on a ranch in New Mexico 20 miles north of Santa Fe and started showing my palomino, Kojak, at the local horseshows and pony club. Having had so much involvement with 4-H on the showing level, I also took part in horse judging contests both regionally and on the state level. As my interest in horses continued to grow I became more interested in the quarter horse association and served as president my last year I competed as a youth. It was not until I became an amateur that I got my first Top 10 placing at the World Show finals in the trail with Bill Hunter. He eventually became a Congress and 2-time Reserve World Champion.

After high school I attended college and completed all of my core requirements for a degree at the University of New Mexico. Because I was unsure which direction to go in my education I stayed out of school until I knew what I wanted. Continuing to show along the way I realized how fit I had to be in order to maintain a high level of competitiveness. After winning the World in 1997 in Amateur Hunter Hack, I had an idea: Personal training for the Equestrian Athlete. I sold my horse, Tel Ima Eagle (my Mom will never forgive me) and went back to school to prepare myself to become certified with the American Council on Exercise. After accomplishing that I realized I needed more. I began work as a physical therapy technician and learned about human movement, anatomy, chronic injury and safe exercise techniques. Even after that experience I still did not feel prepared to train my own clients. My husband and I moved to Los Angeles where I worked under one of the best in the business of personal training, P.K. Alexander. He taught for the National Academy of Sports Medicine and helped to create the protocol for their certification, which they still maintain. I trained at P.K.'s studio and not only started my business but got a continuing education along the way. While I was there I gained my certification with N.A.S.M.

I am always expanding my knowledge in the world of fitness, since weekly a new idea is introduced. My background in Physical Therapy has helped me to recognize what important variables need to be in place to keep exercises beneficial to the body, not harmful. Most recently I have received my certification in Pilates, which I find to be one of the best concepts of all over body balance and strength. Its focus on core strength makes it the best match for an athlete who needs this strength for balance in the saddle.

I am an equestrian athlete with several Top 10 placings at both the quarter horse Congress and the AQHA World finals. I have finished first in the nation on the 'Honor Roll' (a year end high-point competition) and have often been in the top three in my events. I am a Congress Champion and a two-time World Champion.

I have given demonstrations pertaining to all fitness components required of the equestrian athlete at the 2002 Equine Affaire in Columbus, Ohio and the AQHA Youth World cup in Amarillo, Texas this past July.

On a personal note, I am married to my best friend, Tom, for almost 7 years. We just had our first baby girl, Maya.
